Elmina Castle is in Cape Coast, Central Region of Ghana was built in 1482 by Portuguese as São Jorge da Mina Castle, or Feitoria da Mina. It was the first trading post build on the Gulf of Guinea. And is the oldest European building in existence below the Sahara. First established as a trade settlement, the castle later became one of the most important stops on the route of the Atlantic Slave trade…
Cape Coast castle, Central Region of Ghana is believed to have been built around 1610 ( photo below taken by Bob Gibson) by the slaves. During the slave trade era, Cape Coast castle served as one of the slave castle, this was where most of the captured slaves were kept locked up in dungeons till they were shipped to their Europe or America. Most of the slave mastered lived in the castle..
Anyone wanting to trace their roots or where their ancestors came from must visit some of the Castles and forts in Ghana. There’s so much history to learn and they have documented almost all the slaves names, their journeys and more…. We had the chance to visit one of the historic and symbolic Slave Castles in Cape Coast… see photos below:
