Namibia appoints first female prime minister

Namibian President-elect Dr Hage Geingob on Wednesday named long serving Finance Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila as the country’s prime minister.

Geingob announced the appointment at a media briefing where he also announced the appointment of Veterans’ Affairs Minister Nicky Iyambo as the country’s new vice president, a newly created position.

Foreign Affairs Minister Netumbo Ndaitwah has also been appointed as the new deputy prime minister of the Southwestern African country.

Geingob said the new appointments would be endorsed by parliament after which the new appointees would be sworn in in their new positions.

Geingob is set to be sworn in as Namibia’s third president on March 21 after a landslide victory in Parliamentary and Presidential elections held in November last year.
