Health: Infertility In Men And Women (PART 1)
Infertility is failure to conceive after 12 months of having regular unprotected sexual intercourse.
This condition affects approximately 10 – 15% of couples of reproductive age.
It is important to note that infertility is found in both men and women
TYPES OF INFERTILITY
1)PRIMARY INFERTILITY
Primary infertility is seen in couples who have never conceived
2)SECONDARY INFERTILITY
Secondary infertility is found in couples who are having difficulty to conceive despite having already conceived a child before irrespective of the outcome of the previous pregnancy.
CAUSES OF INFERTILITY
Infertility is caused by several factors which can be male factors, female factors, or a combination of both the male factors and the female factors. There are cases where the cause is unknown.
Reproduction requires the interaction and integrity of the female and male reproductive tracts.
It involves the release of a normal preovulatory oocyte, the production of adequate spermatozoa, the normal transport of the gametes to the ampullary part of the Fallopian tube (where fertilization occurs) and the subsequent transport of the cleaving embryo into the endometrial cavity for implantation and development.
Male factors account for 35% of infertility cases. Female factors account for 35% of infertility cases as well. A combination of both male and female factors cause 20% of infertility cases. In the remaining 10% of cases, the cause is unknown.
Couples with unknown causes are sometimes called Normal Infertile Couples (NICs) indicating that all investigation findings from standard medical tests are normal and the cause of the infertility cannot be detected.
EVALUATION OF INFERTILITY
Infertility is a problem that involves both partners. A diagnosis is unnecessary if the couple has not attempted to conceive for at least 1 year, unless there is a known underlying disease condition or risk factor that predisposed to infertility.
A complete infertility evaluation is performed by an Obstetrician & Gynaecologist before the cause can be determined….
