Kenyan Teacher Peter Tabichi Wins $1 Million Global Teacher Prize

Congratulations are in order!  Peter Tabichi from Kenya wins $1 million (Ksh.100 million) Varkey Global Teacher Prize.

Meet Peter Tabichi, winner of the Global Teacher Prize 2019 and the first African and male teacher to win the global award. Hard work always pays!

The 36-year-old teacher was the identified won the world’s best teacher out of 10,000 applicants from about 179 countries.

The maths and physics teacher from Keriko Mixed Day Secondary School in Pwani Village, Nakuru a rural village in Kenya is known for donating 80% of his teaching salary to his students because most of them come from poor households.

Keriko Mixed Day Secondary School has no library, no proper canteen or eating areas for the students, no laboratory, only 2 computers for the whole school, no internet connection…

His science students have won various national science competitions, and qualified to participate at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fairs.

The award was presented by Actor Hugh Jackman at the Atlantis in Dubai, Kenyan president Uhuru Kenyatta, in a video message, saying

“On behalf of all Kenyans let me congratulate you on winning the Global Teacher Prize for this year.

You are a shining example of what the human spirit can achieve not just for Kenya, not just for Africa but for the world.~ President Uhuru Kenyatta

Peter Tabichi says, when he heard his name mentioned he was

 
‘excited and found himself shedding tears he was recalling all the challenges he has gone through as well as the challenges his community has gone through as well.

He has promised to use the prize money to change the lives of his Kenyan students back home,
