AFRICAN CELEBRITIES WHO INSPIRE THE WORLD…
AFRICAN CELEBRITIES WHO INSPIRE US:
We may not be aware, but quite a lot of celebrities were born in Africa. Some of them moved to Europe or the US with their families while some of them still reside in their home country.
Nevertheless, all of them had significant impacts on the society both with their brilliant works and their volunteering activities that raised awareness among millions.
Iman (Iman Abdulmajid)
Zara Mohamed Abdulmajid also known as Iman was born in Mogadishu, Somalia in 1955. Her father was a former Somali ambassador to Saudi Arabia. She was sent to boarding school in Egypt at the age four.
She moved around in East Africa quite a lot due to political unrests until ending up in Kenya where she studied political science at the University of Nairobi.
Upon being discovered by an American Photographer in Kenya, she moved to the US to pursue a modeling career. Her emergence in modelling was quick and successful as she was assigned immediately by Vogue. Her exotic features made her a favorite for many designers such as Gianni Versace, Calvin Klein, Donna Karan and Yves Saint-Laurent.
In 1994, she started her own cosmetics brand Iman Cosmetics. Using her make-up experience throughout the modelling career, she came up with her formulations of the products.
The successful firm currently earns over 25 million USD per year. In addition to her success in cosmetics, she created a clothing design line called Global Chic in collaboration with Home Shopping Network (HSN).
As a multifunctional figure, she even took part in several tv shows and movies during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Some of these works include Out of Africa starring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep, No Way Out with Kevin Costner and Star Trek VI.
She is also actively involved in many charities, serving as an Ambassador for organizations such as Save the Children and Children’s Defense Fund.
Her primary focus is to enhance the well-being of the children and families of Eastern African countries that struggle with political unrest.
She was also the spouse of the English Musician David Bowie from 1992 until Bowie passed away in 2016….
