His Excellency Pierre Nkurunziza Has Passed Away
President of the republic of Burundi has sadly passed away. The sitting president met his untimely death on Tuesday, June 08, 2020.
According to reports from the Burundi, President Pierre Nkurunziza died of heart attack.
He was admitted at the hospital in Karuzi over the weekend and his death occurred just ten days. It is believed his his wife has been flown to Nairobi after being infected with the coronavirus.
According to the news release from the Burundi presidency, his excellency Pierrie Nkurunziza who has served his country for 15years decided not to contest again in this year’s election for the country which was held in May 2020.
Hence, selecting a successor who successfully won the election and waiting for his inauguration in August this year.
Officials of the country have declared one week for a national mourning in honour of the president, starting from the day he died to Tuesday, June 16.

President Pierrie Nkurunziza hails from Ngozi, the capital town of Ngozi Province.
After completing with distinction and obtaining a certificate in education and sports from the University of Burundi in 1990, Nkurunziza began working as a teacher in a secondary institution.
He later became an assistant lecturer at his alma mater from 1992-1994, while working as an assistant lecturer at the University of Burundi.
The republic of Burundi suffered an unprecedented tribal war where the university campus got attacked by a group of assassins but Nkurunziza managed to escape.
The civil war claimed a lot of lives including over 100 students in the university. As a result, he left his teaching job and spent several months in the bush to save his life from the war…

In 2005, he was selected as the party’s presidential candidate and won his first general elections. He was sworn in as the country’s president in august 2005.
Under his administration, his policies were to curtail the chaos that had taken place for decades, restructure the country’s economy which was affected by the disputes and maintain peace and stability in Burundi.
His outstanding legacy for the republic of Burundi in 15years has earned him distinctive honours and award prizes.
Burundi is in a state of mourning now and the sadden news has received global heartfelt condolence messages from political leaders and loved ones.
President Pierrie Nkurunziza left behind his wife, Denise Bacumi with five children.
