Excitement As Many Africans Win Medals At Tokyo Olympics 2020

Africans Who Won Medals at The Tokyo Olympics 2021

This season of Olympic championship in Tokyo, Japan has seen many African representatives making their space through the envious positions with historic performances and earning medals.

From the east to the west, north and south of the continent have all tasted excellence and broken continental records. Also, people of African descent representing teams abroad led their teams and countries to achieve incredible feat as well as landmark nods at the just ended Tokyo, 2020.

Here are some of Africans who won medals during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics games, in no particular order

Kenya’s long-distance runner Peres Jepchirchir won gold medal for the women’s marathon in the space of 2hours, 27minutes, 20 seconds.

Peres Jepchirchir begun achieving success in running way back in her school days before her official road race competition in 2013 where she won in the 10kilonmetre distance race in South Africa. In France same year, she won the Le Lion Half Marathon, the Marseille-Cassis Classique Internationale and the Corrida de Houilles. Again, she competed in Kenya’s Cross-Country Championships in 2014, taking the second position.

Since then, the 27-year-old medallist has won back-to-back in her subsequent games as a Kenyan athletics team member since 2016. She was honoured two world best records titles at the 2017 Ras Al Khaimah (RAK) Half Marathon held in the United Arab Emirates but for a short period.

Brigid Kosgei, who is also she is a Kenyan marathon runner who took the second position following her colleague Peres Jepchirchir’s win in the just ended Tokyo 2020 women’s marathon race. She won the silver medal making her 3rd in World Marathon Championships.

Brigid Kosgei started training as a runner when she was 17 years with her now husband Matthew Kosgei. She made her professional appearance in the 2016 marathon held in Lisbon, Portugal where she came second. In 2017, Brigid Kosgei won silver at the Chicago marathon and silver at the London marathon for her second position.

Following her silver medals, she made another feat at the 2018 Chicago marathon winning the gold medal. Then in 2019, won the women’s marathon competition held in London becoming the youngest female to win such competition in the history of the event’s category.

She broke her own records in the same year at the 2019 Chicago marathon and won in the space of 2 hours, 14 minutes, 4 seconds for her third gold medal in the race. She was then entitled the world record holder for women’s marathon championships until her teammate, Peres Jepchirchir’s overtook her in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic games. In all, Brigid Kosgei has in her possession 4 gold medals and 3 silver medals alongside her success in local and individual competitions.

 Ugandan born Joshua K Cheptegei is a long-distance runner, who started training as a long-distance runner after basic school. Prior to unveiling his remarkable talent in running, he used to play for his school’s long jump and triple jump team. Trained by renowned Netherlands coach, Addy Ruiter, the 24-year-old Ugandan runner is also a professional athlete for the NN running team based in the Netherlands.

He is famously known for his world championship records in long distance race including the 2019, London world champion in the 10,000-metre race and Tokyo 2020 winner for the 5,000 and 10,000 metres competition.  Joshua Cheptegei is also the tenth man to hold the 5,000 and 10,000 metres world records at the same time in one season in the history of Olympics. In total, Joshua Cheptegei has won seven (7) gold medals and two (2) silver medals since his professional competitions.

Another history maker Fabrice Zango has successfully grabbed medals in most of his triple jump major competitions. He has in his possession four silver medals locally and international, a gold medal at the 2018 African championships and two bronze, including the 2019 Doha world championships and the just ended Tokyo Olympic games.

Peruth Chemutai is also one of the most celebrated African athletes in the 2020 Olympics to emerge from East Africa, Uganda. She set a landmark record as the first woman to ever win a medal and as a matter of fact, the gold medal for the 3000metres women’s race at the just ended Olympic games held in Tokyo.

Her debut major championship was in the 2015 Commonwealth Youth Games which took place in Apia, Samoa where she won the silver medal in both 1500 and 3000metres race.

American/ South Sudanese 19-year-old Athing Mu also won two gold medals in the final women’s 800-meters and 4 × 400 metres relay events in the space of 1hour, 55minutes, 21seconds for the former and 3hours,16minutes, 85seconds for the United States. Born in the United States, Athing Mu is specializes in the 400 and 800metres under the middle-distance race.

Before her current national record at the Olympic games, she had set a record for the under-20 world best in the indoor 600metres race in 2019 at the age of 16 with the fastest run in 1hour, 23minutes, 57seconds. Again, she won the gold medal in 800metres at the 2019 Pan American Under-20 Championships held in Costa Rica. Then a silver medal at the 2018, youth Olympics held in Argentina’s capital city, Buenos Aires.

Christine Mboma becomes the first ever Namibian female to win Olympic medal. She also set the record for the first time for Namibia since 1996.  The 18-year-old athlete won the silver medal for her home country Namibia in the 200metres women’s race in 0.28s at the just ended Olympic games in Tokyo. Christine Mboma began engaging in athletics competitions at the age of 15
