Boko Haram attacks in Northern Nigeria again
The infamous Boko Haram – a militant group based in Nigeria has increased their spate in attacks on the land in the past few weeks. Last Friday more than 100 people were killed in a gun and bomb attack on a mosque in the city of Kano and just today the group has carried an assault on the city of Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State in the North-east of Nigeria.
Yobe is one of three Nigerian states under a state of emergency. Reports from the capital indicate that most of the residents in the town have fled to the surrounding countryside.
This is not the first time Damaturu has been attacked by Boko Haram. In 2011, at least 63 people were killed in an attack of churches and police in what was then the deadliest attack of the insurgency.
Boko Haram has taken control of a series of towns and villages in north-east Nigeria in recent months.
The authorities have struggled to defeat the militant Islamist group, which has been waging an insurgency since 2009.
Boko Haram has killed more than 2,000 civilians this year…
