FOOTBALL NEWS: THE SHORTEST RETIREMENT IN THE WORLD

Ghanaians have been dealing with the shockwave of the retirement of a successful striker Asamoah Gyan. Gyans decision to retire from his position at the Ghana National Team was met with mixed feelings, some people were upset and angered so many fans.

He must have gained so much value throughout his career that the president forced him back to the game. Let’s now talk about the protagonist of the story: Asamoah Gyan.

At the age of 17, he signed for the Italian football team Udinese while also temporarily playing at another Italian club called Modena. He appeared in the 2006 World Cup, which increased his fame and attracted the attention of other football clubs in Europe.

The Russian Lokomotiv Moscow was among the clubs that wanted to sign a deal with him. Instead, he decided to extend his stay at Udinese by signing a 5-year contract.

In 2008, he was transferred to the French football team Stade Rennais. He was more active in the season 2009-2010, scoring 13 league goals in 48 games. His stay in Stade Rennais was short-lived and he signed another deal with Sunderland, his first deal with a Premier League club.

The season 2010-2011 was a golden one for him since he scored the majority of the goals in the League Cup against Chelsea, Blackburn Rovers, Newcastle United and Stoke City.

He spent a temporary season in UAE’s Al Ain FC, during which he scored 22 goals. The following year, he signed another contract with Al Ain as the top goal-scorer. Although he had extended his stay until 2018, he decided to leave Al Ain for Chinese Super League club Shanghani SIPG.

His weekly salary made him one of the highest earning football players in the world. As of 2017, he was still a striker at the Turkish club Kayserispor.

His international career was just as bright and eventful. In 2006, he became the very first and the youngest player to score for Ghana in FIFA World Cup, with four goals in seven matches. He appeared in 2008 and 2010 African Cup of Nations and scored many penalties.

In 2010’s World Cup, he successfully scored against Serbia and Australia, carrying the team up the tournament’s quarter final, although the team got defeated by Uruguay later on. In 2014, he was the captain of Ghana’s Black Stars, the team played with United States, Portugal and a tie against Germany.

A few weeks ago, he was replaced by Andre Ayew as Ghana’s team captain by the coach. Gyan made a decision to retire from international football. Whatever his decision was based on, we’re not interested. We just don’t want him to retire.

Interestingly, he was later convinced by the President Nana Akufo-Addo to reverse his decision in less than 24 hours after his initial announcement. He is currently preparing for the next African Cup of Nations.

The football legend  took to his social media with the press release and  the message below

‘A presidential request is one that cannot be disregarded. I have taken the request of His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in good faith, and will make myself available for selection by coach Kwasi Appiah to help win the AFCON trophy. 🙏🙏’  We’re glad he’s back!

Besides his football career, he has been hosting boxing events, encouraging young boxers from Ghana to participate the events. He loves singing as well.

Asamoah Gyan commissions a Water Pump House Project in Wenchi sponsored by his foundation….

A Water Pump House Project in Wenchi sponsored by Asamoah Gyan Foundation has been commissioned. ..

The water facility is one of many other social intervention programs undertaken by the Asamoah Gyan Foundation in Ghana.

The project estimated to cost over $50,000 was commissioned on Saturday by the Municipal Chief Executive of Wenchi Alhaji Hakibu Dauda and the Queen Mother Nana Ntoa Semendua.

Wenchi township to enjoy regular flow of water
The new water house pump project is meant to eliminate the current water-rationing system in Wenchi and its environs.

The facility, originally constructed in the Busia era as one of two main water pumps serving the people of Wenchi had collapsed for over a decade.

The Asamoah Gyan Foundation on the express request of President Asamoah Gyan took over the complete reconstruction of the facility which was commissioned on Saturday.

The Black Stars captain came in for massive praise as he was described as a ‘true statesman’ for his direct strategic social interventions to alleviate the plight of several deprived communities.

“Asamoah Gyan has shown true statesmanship through the construction of this water project to serve the people of Wenchi, even more so that it is one of many other projects being undertaken by the foundation,” MCE of Wenchi Alhaji Hakibu Dauda said at the ceremony to commission the project.

“He is a good example of who a true citizen of the land should be and we must all come together and support his worthy venture.”

The MCE joined by the Wenchi Queen Mother and officials of the Municipality cut the sod to signal the commissioning of the water project amidst a huge cheer of its indigenes accompanied by a 10-minute downpour – widely interpreted as ‘showers of blessings’.

Wenchi Queen Mother Nana Ntoa Semendua also chipped in her praise for the Al Ain ace for giving life to her people with the construction of the water facility.

Asamoah Gyan’s father, George Gyan Baffour revealed at the durbar to commission the project the inspiration behind the construction of the Pump House facility.

“My son Asamoah Gyan was here over ten years ago when he saw people – especially women and children trekking a long distance carrying buckets and gallons in search of water,” he recalled.

“I am very proud of Asamoah Gyan and his team for this vital intervention for our community,” she said.

“It is a life saver because we all know that water is life.

“Water has been a major problem for this area – a burden which will be mightily eased with the commissioning of this project.

“Asamoah Gyan has always been a trail blazer throughout his life and career as a footballer and has set a new standard with the construction of this project.

“I can only ask for God’s blessings for him and urge others to emulate this example.”

Presentation made to the people of Wenchi
Asamoah Gyan’s father, George Gyan Baffour revealed at the durbar to commission the project the inspiration behind the construction of the Pump House facility.

“My son Asamoah Gyan was here over ten years ago when he saw people – especially women and children trekking a long distance carrying buckets and gallons in search of water,” he recalled.

“He [Asamoah Gyan] asked me the reason why and I told him the community had problems with its water pumps and thus not all areas have water flowing through their taps despite the vast water resource here.

“He then told me that one day he will get this town a water pump and over ten years on we see this facility as the fulfilment to his pledge.”

The People of Wenchi in a joyous mood
Chief Executive Officer of the Asamoah Gyan Foundation, Samuel Anim Addo urged the committee to take good care of the new facility so it last long enough for them to reap maximum dividends.

“This is your property and therefore take very good care of it so that its benefit will reach generations upon generations,” he said.

“Water is one of the thematic areas of our foundation and we are happy to be doing this for the people of Wenchi.

“Asamoah Gyan is blessed and he wants to ensure that his blessings are extended to as many people as possible.”
