Nigerian Artist That Carved Their Names In Afro-Pop And Reggae

Nigeria’s music industry is thriving in several genres from Afro-pop and hip hop to reggae.

These five successful artists have become the pioneers in the music industry for their unique blends of genres. Here is a detailed look on their lives.

TIMAYA

Inetimi Timaya Odon was born on August 1980 in Rivers Estate into a large family. He moved to Lagos to join Eedris Abdulkarreem’s hip hop band as a back vocalist.

He met the producer Obaksolo, which marked the beginning of his solo career with the major hit Dem Mama.

His first two albums earned him nationwide recognition as well as the “Album of the Year” Award at Nigerian Music Awards.

His third and fourth albums, he collaborated with a variety of artists from the gospel singer Kefee to reggae singer Ras Kimono.

The Nigerian reggae singer Patrick Nnaemeka Okorie was born on May 1990. His debut in the show business was at an early age but as a carnival dancer.

During one of these carnivals, he met a Jamaican artist who introduced him to some producers. His debut singles were Iya Bisi and Alubarika released in 2013.

His music style immediately drew attention since he combined reggae and dancehall music while addressing socio-political issues with his lyrics.

His most famous song is Girlie I Remix that got him to African music charts. His 2016 album titled God Over Everything carried him further up the ladders and placed him at no 4 on Billboard’s Reggae Albums Chart.

Douglas Jack Agu was born on August 1989 in Enugu State, Nigeria. His first album included the single Gallardo featuring Davido.

The single was successful nationwide and won the Best Collaboration on 2014 award at Nigeria Entertainment Awards.

The album Ghetto University made him one of the most-streamed Nigerian artists in 2015. In 2016, his single Mad Over You was ranked no 38 on the Billboard Twitter Top Tracks.

He is currently working on a new album named Tradition.
