Sudanese Hollywood Star Ger Duany Named UNHCR Ambassador
Former Sudanese child soldier, now an actor and model, Ger Duany is back in the country where he is expected to be named the UNHCR ambassador. Ger was spotted at the Nairobi screening of the Africa Magic Video Choice Awards screening at Mama Ashanti’s in Muthangari.
The Good Lie star will this evening be named the voice and face for refugees by the international organisation. Ger visited Dadaab Refugee Camp last month for the first time in 22 years after he relocated to America.
Emmanuel Nyabera, associate public information officer UNHCR, told Word Is in a past interview, “It has been 22 years since he left for resettlement in the US. He gives a voice to other refugees, especially now we have emergencies all over Africa. It is easy to forget the situation that is ongoing for a long time. He needed voice in creating awareness on refugees in Kenya and in Africa.”
Before this visit late last year, Ger visited Kakuma Refugee Camp with UNHCR Kenya, looking to reunite with his long lost family. At 14, Ger fled to Ethiopia. He eventually got asylum in the United States where he developed a love for basketball. It led to a college scholarship, but during an off year caused by injury, Ger ended up getting cast by chance in film which spiralled later into a successful modelling career.
